TEST FORMAT
IELTS consists of four components; speaking, reading,listening and writing. All candidates take the same Listening and Speakingtests. There is a choice of reading and writing tests based on the category ofStudent; whether a candidate is taking the academic or general training module.
The total test duration is 2hr 45 Minutes.
ACADEMIC MODULE:
It is taken by candidates who wish to study at undergraduate or postgraduate levels and for those seeking professional registration
GENERAL TRAINING MODULE:
It is taken by candidates who wish to migrate to an English-speaking country (Australia, Canada, New Zealand, UK etc.)
ACADEMIC MODULE FORMAT
1. ACADEMIC READING- 3 SECTIONS, 40 ITEMS; 60 MINUTES.
The reading section consists of three different texts and a total of 40 questions. The task types are multiple-choice questions, identifying information questions like true, false and not given, yes, no, not given questions, matching information, headings, figures, matching sentence endings, sentence completion, notes/summary/table/flowchart completion, labelling a diagram and short answer questions. Duration of the entire section is 60 minutes.
2. ACADEMIC WRITING- 2 TASKS; ONE HOUR.
This section has two tasks and a candidate needs to attempt both the tasks.
WRITING TASK 1- In this a candidate needs to describe and summarize the visual information. The image can be a table, graph, map or a diagram. The time given is 20 minutes and word limit is 150 words.
WRITING TASK 2- In this a candidate needs to write an essay. The essay can be on any format; opinion based, discussion, problem solution, evaluate a problem, compare and contrast different ideas etc. the time given for this task is 40 minutes and the word limit is 250 words.
3. LISTENING
Academic and General Training candidates take the same listening test. This consists of four sections and a total of 40 questions. Section 1 and 2 are set in a social context and section 3 and 4 are set in an academic context. There are 10 questions in each section with different task type like note/ table/flowchart / summary completion, multiple choice, short answer questions, sentence completion, labelling a diagram, plan or map, classification and matching. The duration for this section is 30 minutes (plus an additional 10 minutes to transfer your answers)
4. SPEAKING
Academic and General training candidates take the same speaking test. This test consists of an interview with a trained examiner. The interview is recorded and has three separate parts.
Part 1- This part will have 2-3 short, simple conversations about your personal preferences or experiences. (Duration 4-5 minutes)
Part 1- You will be given a topic. You need to talk on the topic for 1-2 minutes. There may be one -two follow-up questions. You will get 2- minute of preparation time. (Duration- 3-4 minutes)
Part 3- The examiner will ask you more detailed and abstract questions about the topic in part 2. Duration 4-5 minutes.
GENERAL TRAINING MODULE FORMAT
The general training module is commonly taken for immigration purposes Academic and general training candidates take the same listening and speaking sections. The reading and writing section are different.
1. GENERAL TRAINING - READING- (Duration - one hour)
This section consists of three different sections and a total of 40 questions.
Section 1 consists of 2-3 short texts or several shorter ones.
Section 2 consists of 2 texts related to workplace.
Section 3 consists of 1 long discursive text.
The task type includes multiple choice questions, identifying information questions like true, false and not given, yes, no, not given questions, matching information, headings, figures, matching sentence endings, sentence completion, notes / summary/ table/ flowchart completion, labelling a diagram, short answer questions and multiple matching questions.
2. GENERAL TRAINING - WRITING- (Duration - one hour)
This test consists of two separate writing tasks.
WRITING TASK 1 - letter writing in response to a given situation. The time given for this task is 20 minutes and word limit is 150 words.
WRITING TASK 2- his section is essay writing section where one needs to give an opinion, problem or issue, provide a solution, evaluate a problem, compare and contrast different ideas or opinions or challenge an argument or idea. The duration of this task is 40 minutes and word limit is 250 words.
